Hernia de Amyand tipo 2 de Losanoff incarcerada: reporte de caso
By Brigitte García and Laura Rodriguez Reyes.
Abstract
Introduction
Amyand’s hernia is a rare condition, reported in approximately 1% of inguinal hernias. Fewer than 0.1% of cases are associated with appendicitis. Its intraoperative finding often raises controversy regarding the optimal surgical approach.
Case report
An 81-year-old male with a history of hypertension presented with a 24-hour history of right inguinal pain and swelling. On examination, a tender, irreducible mass with local inflammatory changes was noted. Emergency surgery was performed for incarcerated inguinal hernia, where an inflamed appendix was identified within the hernia sac, consistent with a type 2 Amyand’s hernia according to Losanoff and Basson classification. Appendectomy and hernia repair with Lichtenstein technique using polypropylene mesh were performed. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged 48 hours after surgery.
