Abstract
Abstract Nigella sativa commonly known as Black Seed or Black Cumin, is one of the most valuable medicinal plants utilized in traditional and modern herbal medicine. The plant belongs to the Ranunculaceae family and is widely cultivated in the Mediterranean region, Middle East, Asia, and parts of Africa. Black seed has gained remarkable industrial and pharmaceutical importance because of its rich composition of bioactive compounds such as thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, nigellidine, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, essential oils, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and unsaturated fatty acids. These constituents contribute to numerous biological and therapeutic activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, anti-aging, anti-diabetic, anticancer, antihypertensive, hepatoprotective, and wound-healing properties. Recent scientific studies have shown that black seed possesses significant potentials for application in cosmetic formulations, dermatological products, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical preparations. In skin care applications, black seed oil functions as an emollient, moisturizer, antioxidant agent, anti-acne ingredient, anti-aging enhancer, and skin barrier repair agent. In health care products, the seed and its extracts have demonstrated therapeutic effects against metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, microbial infections, inflammatory disorders, respiratory diseases, and immune dysfunctions. This review presents an expanded evaluation of the chemistry, pharmacological properties, formulation approaches, industrial applications, therapeutic benefits, mechanisms of action, and recent innovations involving black seed in skin care and health care products. The study also discusses formulation methodologies, quality considerations, safety evaluations, and future prospects of black seed utilization in modern cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
