Abstract
Obstetric violence is a public health issue that compromises the quality of care provided to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, encompassing disrespectful practices, unnecessary interventions, and violations of women's rights. In this context, nurses play a fundamental role in promoting safe, respectful, and evidence-based care, ensuring women's autonomy and the implementation of good obstetric practices. This study aimed to analyze the role of nurses in addressing obstetric violence, highlighting their responsibilities, care practices, and contributions to promoting humanized care during childbirth and the postpartum period. This research is a narrative literature review based on scientific publications retrieved from the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Virtual Health Library (VHL), Google Scholar, and the CAPES Journal Portal. Studies published between 2010 and 2026 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. The literature analysis demonstrated that nurses are responsible for health education, maternal and fetal monitoring, patient-centered care, effective communication, prevention of obstetric violence, promotion of evidence-based obstetric practices, and continuous support throughout childbirth and the postpartum period. The findings also revealed persistent challenges related to unnecessary obstetric interventions, limitations on women's autonomy during childbirth, and the need for continuous professional education to improve the quality of care. It is concluded that nurses play a central role in organizing obstetric care by implementing evidence-based practices, preventing inappropriate interventions, and promoting comprehensive, safe, and woman-centered care that respects women's rights throughout the childbirth process.
