Abstract
Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) and contributes substantially to the cardiovascular disease burden. This study aimed to analyze the association between hypertension and CHD among patients attending the Cardiology Clinic of Meuraxa Regional General Hospital, Banda Aceh, in 2024. An observational analytical study with a retrospective case-control design was conducted using secondary medical record data. A total of 128 participants were included, comprising 64 CHD cases and 64 non-CHD controls, selected by simple random sampling according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the chi-square continuity test at α=0.05 and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The case group was predominantly male (71.9%) and aged ≥45 years (82.8%), while the control group was also predominantly male (57.8%) and aged ≥45 years (90.6%). Hypertension was present in 60.9% of cases and 40.6% of controls. The chi-square continuity test demonstrated a significant association between hypertension and CHD (p=0.034). Participants with hypertension had 2.280 times higher odds of CHD than those without hypertension (OR=2.280; 95% CI=1.123–4.627). These findings indicate that hypertension is significantly associated with CHD and highlight the importance of blood pressure control, regular screening, and comprehensive cardiovascular risk prevention in healthcare settings.
