Preoperative Serum Albumin and Body Mass Index as Predictors of Postoperative Outcomes in Emergency Abdominal Surgery: A Prospective Observational Study
By Sudhir S.
Abstract
Background
Emergency abdominal surgery is associated with substantial postoperative morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients with poor nutritional and physiological reserve. This study evaluated preoperative serum albumin and body mass index (BMI) as predictors of postoperative outcomes following emergency laparotomy.
Methods
This prospective observational study included 60 patients aged 18–60 years who underwent emergency laparotomy at a tertiary-care hospital. Preoperative serum albumin, BMI, clinical characteristics, postoperative complications, Clavien–Dindo grade, hospital stay, and in-hospital mortality were recorded and analysed using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, independent-samples t-test, and correlation analysis, with p<0.05 considered significant.
