Abstract / Summary
Cerebral palsy is a clinically defined symptom complex applied to individuals with a static, non progressive motor impairment of early onset, cerebral in origin. It is an aetiologically heterogeneous condition with multiple causes that feature an aberration or injury to the maturing central nervous system. Lissencephaly is a rare congenital condition that causes the developing brain to appear smooth, rather than the normal sulci and gyri. Here is a case of a 7-month-old female child with features like microcephaly, hypertonia and atypical movements, suggestive of quadriplegic cerebral palsy. The child also had multiple infantile spasms and was managed for the same. On Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies, features of lissencephaly with Dandy-Walker malformation were noted. While a child with cerebral palsy can be diagnosed with anatomical malformations of the brain as well as seizures, the convergence of lissencephaly and infantile spams in a child with diagnosis of cerebral palsy is a rare phenomenon. Hence, the need to do a comprehensive workup of a child with cerebral palsy is critical to not miss the associated conditions. The present case highlights the importance of a comprehensive workup for a child with cerebral palsy to address correctable issues and improve quality of life.
