Consumer Research on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities:
By Sara Okabe.
Abstract
Growing societal awareness regarding diversity, inclusion, and equity has led to increased academic attention placed on consumers with disabilities. However, most of the existing studies have been focused on physical disabilities, while research on consumer behavior involving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities remains underdeveloped. In this study, a comprehensive scoping review of 27 relevant articles using the TCCM (Theory, Context, Characteristics, and Methodology) framework is conducted, the literature is organized and future research directions are presented.Theoretical diversity is evident, but only a few theories appear across multiple studies, indicating that the field is still in its early stage of theory development. From a contextual perspective, research has often been conducted to examine digital technologies, unique consumption behaviors, and the use of social media.Future studies are likely to address emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, influencers, and social interactions. In terms of characteristics, scholars can categorize prior research by type of participant, type and severity of disability, and dependent variables. In future work, more detailed segmentation, interactions with other identities, and the impact of corporate marketing strategies could be explored.Methodologically, while most studies have used interviews or surveys, the combination of diverse approaches may enhance the understanding of consumers who face difficulties in verbal communication.Longitudinal research is also essential to consider temporal and social influences.
