Abstract / Summary
Background: The acetabulum is a cavity on the lateral surface of hip bone, also known as the os coxae. The head of femur articulates with the acetabulum to form the hip joint. The anterior acetabular ridge is the bony anterior margin of the acetabulum. It is formed by contributions from the ilium and pubis. The shape of the anterior acetabular ridge varies in different individuals. Aims and Objectives: The current study aimed primarily to identify the different shapes of the anterior acetabular ridge and to determine the frequency and distribution of each morphological type in different hip bones. In addition, it compared the shapes of the anterior acetabular ridge between male and female hip bones. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 200 adult dry human hip bones. The bones were collected from the Department of Anatomy, Believers Church Medical College. The shape of the anterior acetabular ridge was studied and classified as straight, angular, irregular, and curved. Frequency and percentage of distribution of various shapes of the anterior acetabular ridge were noted down. Results: Curved shape showed the highest frequency, followed by straight, angular, and irregular. Chi-square test was applied to compare the shapes in male and female hip bones. Conclusion: In this era of robotic surgeries and artificial intelligence, awareness regarding the shape of anterior acetabular ridge is important for orthopedic surgeons and also in the field of anatomy, orthopedics, and forensic anthropology. The study on shape of the rim also helps radiologists to diagnose hip dysplasia or any congenital deformities.
