Abstract
Introduction
With global warming, heatwaves are increasing in severity, affecting species worldwide. Recent studies show associations between heat exposure in pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth across multiple species. This suggests potentially conserved mechanisms such as maternal inflammation, dehydration and changes in placental physiology in response to heat exposure. Moreover, the gestational timing of antenatal heat likely impacts the type and severity of outcome, yet this is not fully understood.
