Utility of Platelet Indices in Determining the Causes of Thrombocytopenia: A Cross-Sectional Study
By B Senthil, Balaji P M and Selvi S.
Abstract
Background
Thrombocytopenia is a common haematological abnormality that may result from decreased platelet production, increased peripheral destruction or consumption, or abnormal sequestration. Platelet count alone does not provide information regarding platelet size and turnover. Automated haematology analysers provide platelet indices such as mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), which may provide additional information regarding the underlying mechanism of thrombocytopenia.
