Comparison of Perioperative Metabolic, Hematological and Physiological Homeostasis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Under Different Anesthetic Modalities
By Baraa H. Ali.
Abstract
Background
Surgical trauma and anesthesia exposure initiate complex physiological stress pathways that pose a substantial challenge for perioperative glycemic control and systemic homeostasis in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
Aim
The aim of this prospective observational study was to explore and quantify the clinical variations in biochemical, hematological and metabolic balances under General Anesthesia (GA), Spinal Anesthesia (SA) and healthy controls Methods: A cohort of 75 clinical cases (50–65 years of age) diagnosed with T2DM and undergoing elective surgical procedures were closely monitored. Preoperative and immediate post-operative fasting blood sugar (FBS), complete blood count (CBC), blood urea, serum creatinine, electrolytes (Na+, K+) and continuous ECG heart rate (HR) were systematically documented.
