Selective Stromal Melanin Modulation: A Three-Level Framework for Evaluating Biophysical, Anatomical, and Functional Selectivity
By Mete Mustafa.
Abstract
Selective stromal melanin modulation (SSMM) is a conceptual framework developed within the Lumineyes™ method to describe preferential interaction with melanin-bearing structures of the anterior iris stroma. This Scientific Perspective introduces a three-level framework distinguishing biophysical targeting, anatomical confinement, and functional preservation. Each dimension represents a distinct scientific question requiring independent evaluation and appropriate evidence. The framework examines the relationship between selective chromophore interaction, tissue-level effects, and clinically relevant ocular function. It establishes conceptual boundaries for interpreting mechanistic observations and proposes testable criteria for future experimental and clinical investigation. By separating preferential energy absorption from anatomical and functional outcomes, SSMM provides a structured approach to evaluating tissue selectivity in iris-directed laser procedures and supports greater precision in scientific reporting.
