Abstract
Hereditary Hemolytic Anemias in Children: Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, Management, and Indian Case StudiesHereditary hemolytic anemias are a group of genetic disorders characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells, resulting in chronic or recurrent anemia. These conditions include hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, as well as red blood cell membrane and enzyme disorders. They represent an important public health concern, particularly in India, where hemoglobin disorders contribute significantly to the burden of inherited blood diseases. This article provides an overview of the etiology, classification, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment of hereditary hemolytic anemias in children. It also highlights the importance of early diagnosis, genetic counseling, newborn screening, and preventive strategies. Special attention is given to the Indian scenario, including relevant clinical case studies and challenges in disease management. Advances in treatment, including blood transfusion therapy, iron chelation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and emerging gene therapies, are also discussed. The aim of this article is to improve understanding of hereditary hemolytic anemias among medical students and healthcare professionals and to emphasize the importance of early intervention, comprehensive care, and public health initiatives in improving patient outcomes.
