Beyond the DSM-5-TR Intellectual Disability Profile

This article reinterprets the DSM-5-TR intellectual disability profile through the SMART-NB methodology, emphasizing the distinction between intellectual test performance and real-world adaptive functioning. It proposes a multidimensional functional assessment of conceptual, social, and practical abilities, integrating communication, learning, executive functioning, autonomy, behavioral regulation, medical and neurological conditions, environmental demands, support needs, and developmental change. The objective is to complement diagnostic classification with a longitudinal functional profile that can guide individualized clinical priorities and intervention goals.
