Abstract
Objectives: Novel tobacco products (NTPs), including heated tobacco products (HTPs) and liquid-type ecigarettes, are widely used in Korea, but their relationship with cessation intentions remains unclear. We examined cross-sectional associations between tobacco product use patterns and intention to quit tobacco use within 1 month among Korean adult men. Methods: We used Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2019-2022) to analyze 3,218 men aged ≥19 years who currently used tobacco products. The primary analysis compared NTP users with conventional cigarette-only users; secondary analyses examined 7 mutually exclusive use patterns. We estimated associations using survey-weighted logistic regression, adjusting for age, education level, household income, residential area, binge drinking, aerobic physical activity, perceived stress, and survey year. Results: NTP use was associated with lower odds of intending to quit tobacco use within 1 month (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.586; 95% confidence interval, 0.443-0.774;weighted prevalence, 12.1% vs. 18.0%).Across the 7 use patterns, adjusted estimates were below 1 for every NTP-containing pattern (aOR range, 0.387-0.677;global P = 0.020).Conclusions: Among Korean adult men who currently used tobacco products, NTP use was associated with lower odds of intending to quit tobacco use within 1 month.Cessation counseling and support services should give attention to users of HTPs and liquid-type e-cigarettes.
