Background
Trimalleolar ankle fractures (TMFs) compromise ankle biomechanics; optimal operative strategy is debated. We compared single-stage open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with staged external fixation (EF) plus ORIF for outcomes and hospital billed charges.
