Abstract / Summary
The current review provides a comprehensive understanding of the links between physical activity and mental health outcomes. A total of 38 studies were included in this review. The PRISMA guideline was followed during the search and screening process. The main findings of the review indicate that physical activity and exercise were positively related to mental health outcomes, including subjective well-being, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being. Additionally, students’ active engagement in physical activity and exercise was associated with reduced negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, stress, anxiety, and burnout. The review also identifies several psychosocial factors, such as self-efficacy, social support, emotional intelligence, and resilience, as potential mediators. The strengths, limitations, research gaps, and future research directions are also discussed.
