Abstract
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a multifactorial ocular surface disorder characterized by tear-film instability. This study aimed to determine factors associated with DES among students of the Faculty of Engineering at Abulyatama University and to identify the most dominant variable. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 161 students from the 2022 cohort using total sampling. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 146 respondents were analyzed. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), then analyzed using univariate analysis, the Chi-Square test for bivariate analysis, and logistic regression for multivariate analysis. DES was identified in 114 respondents (78.1%). Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between age (p = 0.006), sex (p = 0.006), gadget-use duration (p = 0.014), and duration of exposure to air-conditioned rooms (p = 0.010) and DES. Smoking was not significantly associated with DES (p = 0.731). Multivariate analysis showed that age (p = 0.003; OR = 6.598) and sex (p = 0.011; OR = 14.369) remained significantly associated with DES. Sex was the most dominant variable in the final model. In conclusion, age, sex, gadget-use duration, and exposure to air-conditioned rooms were associated with DES.
