Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Blood glucose control can be achieved through pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. One of the non-pharmacological therapies that has been widely investigated is boiled cherry leaf (Muntingia calabura L.), which contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and polyphenols that may help reduce blood glucose levels. Study Objective: To analyze the findings of studies on the effect of boiled cherry leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) decoction on blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus through a Systematic Literature Review. Research Method: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review approach. Articles were searched through the PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and ScienceDirect databases with a publication period from 2016 to 2026. Article selection was conducted using the PICOS framework based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the articles was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Quasi-Experimental Studies. Research Results: A total of 2,051 articles were identified through the literature search process, and 10 articles met the eligibility criteria for analysis. The synthesis showed that the administration of boiled cherry leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) reduced blood glucose levels from 166.90–546.11 mg/dL to 141.70–322.97 mg/dL, accompanied by changes in blood glucose categories from diabetes to prediabetes, high to normal, and uncontrolled (86.7%) to controlled (80.0%). Conclusion: The findings of this Systematic Literature Review indicate that boiled cherry leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) has an effect on changes in blood glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus and may be considered as a complementary therapy in diabetes mellitus management.
