Abstract
Adolescence is marked by sexual maturation, including the onset of menstruation. Poor personal hygiene practices during menstruation can trigger reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Communal environments such as Islamic boarding schools (dayah) have distinctive characteristics that influence female students’ access to information and responses regarding reproductive health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent girls at Dayah Terpadu Insafuddin, Banda Aceh. The study employed a quantitative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was conducted using a total sampling technique, involving 78 senior high school female students as respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The univariate analysis showed that most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (47.4%), the majority had poor attitudes (53.8%), and most had good menstrual hygiene practices (59.0%). The bivariate analysis showed no significant relationship between the level of knowledge and menstrual hygiene practices (p-value = 0.390 > 0.05). Conversely, there was a significant relationship between attitudes and menstrual hygiene practices among the students (p-value = 0.015 < 0.05). The findings indicate that menstrual hygiene practices in this dayah are more influenced by attitude formation and daily social interactions than by individual theoretical understanding. Therefore, reproductive health education in the dayah environment should focus on improving attitudes in order to correct misconceptions.
