Abstract
Maternal discomforts such as nausea and vomiting, labor pain, low back pain, and anxiety are common conditions experienced during pregnancy and childbirth. Acupressure is one of the non-pharmacological interventions used to help manage these conditions. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of acupressure in midwifery and maternal care based on recent research findings. The study employed a narrative literature review method using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach. Article searches were conducted through Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SAGE Journals databases from 2021–2025. A total of 2,274 articles were identified, and after the selection process, 13 articles met the inclusion criteria. The review findings indicated that acupressure was effective in reducing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, labor pain, low back pain, and anxiety in pregnant women. Most studies demonstrated consistent results, particularly those using randomized controlled trial designs. Acupressure is considered safe, non-invasive, easy to apply, and has minimal side effects, making it a potential complementary therapy based on evidence-based practice in maternal care.
