Abstract
This study aimed to determine the colon in loop examination technique in pediatric patients with a clinical diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease at the Radiology Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital. The colon in loop examination is a radiographic procedure used to evaluate Hirschsprung disease, a congenital disorder caused by the absence of ganglion cells in the colon , resulting in impaired peristalsis and functional bowel obstruction. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach conducted from September 2025 to July 2026. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving three radiographers and one radiologist. The results showed that the examination was performed without any special patient preparation. The contrast medium consisted of an iodine solution diluted with normal saline at a ratio of 1:6, with a total volume of 350 cc administered gradually in three stages according to the patient's colon ic condition to obtain optimal visualization. The radiographic projectionsincluded AP plain, lateral contrast, AP contrast, and post-24-hour AP evaluation. The additional post-24-hour AP evaluation projection was performed to assess contrast retention in the colon as supportive evidence for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease. Throughout the examination, the patient was accompanied by a parent or family member wearing a radiation-protective apron. In conclusion, the colon in loop examination technique at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital incorporates modifications, including the gradual administration of 350 cc of iodine contrast medium diluted with normal saline and the addition of an post-24-hour AP evaluation projection, providing optimal colon ic visualization to support the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease.
