School food culture may promote an "unhealthy = fun” intuition
By Oskar Pineño.
Abstract
Schools influence children's eating behavior not only through the foods they provide but also through the beliefs and expectations they help shape about food. This commentary proposes the concept of an "unhealthy = fun" intuition, whereby unhealthy foods become associated with celebration, reward, and enjoyment. Drawing on research on food-related emotional expectancies and the "unhealthy = tasty" intuition, I suggest that school food culture may inadvertently reinforce this association through classroom celebrations and other food-related activities in which energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods are paired with positive emotional experiences. Although the "unhealthy = fun" intuition has not been directly studied, it may represent one pathway through which food-related emotional expectancies influence eating behavior. Potential implications for children's food attitudes, emotional eating, and long-term dietary patterns are discussed, along with directions for future research and school-based intervention.
