Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasingly found among adolescents due to unhealthy lifestyles, making preventive education at school age necessary. This study aimed to analyze the effect of health education using animated video on knowledge and attitudes toward DM prevention among vocational high school students. This quantitative pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest–posttest design and was conducted at SMK Negeri 16 Bengkuring, Samarinda, in April 2026. The sample consisted of 34 tenth-grade students of the Computer and Network Engineering major, selected as a single class cluster. The intervention was a 60-minute screening of the animated video “Kenali dan Cegah DM Tipe 2”. Knowledge was measured using an adapted Adolescents Diabetes Awareness Test (30 items) and attitudes using an adapted Diabetes-related Instrument to Assess Beliefs of Adolescents (16 items). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The proportion of students with good knowledge increased from 35.3% to 85.3%, and the proportion with good attitudes increased from 8.8% to 97.1%. The Wilcoxon test showed significant differences before and after the intervention for knowledge (Z = −3.682; p < 0.001) and attitudes (Z = −5.296; p < 0.001). Health education using animated video improved students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding DM prevention. Animated video may be considered as a school-based educational medium for DM prevention among adolescents, although the absence of a control group limits causal inference.
