Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease with an increasing prevalence that requires optimal blood glucose control. In addition to pharmacological treatment, complementary herbal therapy, such as a decoction of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) simplicia, has the potential to serve as an alternative treatment because it contains flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, which exhibit antidiabetic properties through antioxidant activity, improved insulin sensitivity, and inhibition of glucose absorption. This study aimed to analyze the effect of administering a decoction of red betel leaf simplicia on reducing blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus at Panti Werdha Budi Mulia 2. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental pre-test with control group design. A total of 30 respondents were selected through purposive sampling and divided into intervention and control groups. Blood glucose data were collected through observation and measurement using a glucometer and analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk, Wilcoxon, and Mann–Whitney tests. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in blood glucose reduction between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.001), indicating that the administration of red betel leaf simplicia decoction was effective in reducing blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Therefore, red betel leaf simplicia decoction has the potential to be used as a complementary therapy for blood glucose management.
