Abstract
Background
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention is the standard treatment for restoringcoronary blood flow, but femoral sheath removal may cause local vascular complicationssuch as hematoma and pain, which may increase the patient length of stay and hospitalcost.
Aim
Evaluate the effect of using sandbag and cold compresses in reducing thehematoma formation and pain severity among patients post percutaneous coronaryintervention. Design & setting: A quasi-experimental research design was carried out inthe Cardiac Care Unit of Tanta Main University Hospitals, Gharbia government .Subjects:A purposive sample of 100 post PCI patients. Tools: two tools were utilized Tool (I):Cardiac Catheterization Patient’s Assessment Tool: it included 2 parts as the following:part (a): Patients’ Socio Demographic Characteristics, and part (b): Patient’s ClinicalData, Tool (II): Cardiac Catheterization Patient’s Clinical Outcomes AssessmentTool: it included 3 parts as the following: part (a): Patient's Neurovascular AssessmentSheet, part (b): Hematoma Formation Scale, and part (c): Numerical Pain Rating Scale. Results: Patients using sandbags and cold compresses showed statistically significantreductions in both hematoma size (p=0.000) and pain severity (p=0.002) at 4 hours post-sheath removal.
