Abstract / Summary
Abstract Background This study assessed serum aflatoxin B 1 -lysine (AFB 1 -Lys) adduct levels and the risk of liver function abnormalities among Guangzhou residents with high or ordinary consumption of traditional homemade peanut oil. Methods From 2022 to 2024, demographic data and serum samples were collected from residents in areas with high and ordinary consumption of traditional homemade peanut oil in Guangzhou, China. Serum AFB 1 -Lys adduct levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed using R version 4.4.3 to improve baseline comparability, followed by binary logistic regression to assess the association between residential region and liver function abnormalities. Result Serum AFB 1 -Lys adduct levels were higher in high-consumption areas than in ordinary-consumption areas (4.58 ± 4.00 ng/mL). After propensity score matching and covariate adjustment, high-consumption area residence was significantly associated with liver function abnormalities. Conclusion Residents in areas with higher consumption of traditional home-made peanut oil in Guangzhou have significantly elevated serum AFB 1 -Lys levels and an increased risk of liver function abnormalities, suggesting that prolonged AFB 1 exposure may contribute to liver function abnormalities.
