Abstract Objective To discuss the efficacy of repeated low-level red-light (RLRL)as an alternative treatment therapy for children myopia control. Methods Using the retrospective cohort study method, a group of 35 myopic children and adolescents myopia patients were selected as the experiment group who used the RLRL for 3 years and followed up as requred. Both of their eyes were treated with RLRL while only the right eye was selected for the study. Another 35 children and adolescent myopia patients were selected as the control group who only wore single-focal glasses for 3 years and followed up. The baseline characteristics of the two groups matched. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), spherical equivalent(SE), axial length(AL), fundus of both groups were reexamined every 3 months during treatment. Results The AL growth of RLRL group was lower than the control group obviously after 3 years (the F value of inter group was 5.195,P=0.026) ,and the AL of the RLRL group reached the lowest points in the 3 and 6 month, and then rised slowly. The SE of RLRL group showed a decreasing trend in the first 6 months and then rised slowly compared with the control group (the F value of inter group was 632.561,P<0.01). And the UCVA of group RLRL showed less significant reduction compared with control group after 3 years , the total effective rate was up to 80%. No ocular complication was observed in RLRL group, including conjunctival congestion, corneal edema, corneal ulcer and cataract. There was one sample who got macular ellipsoid zone fracture in the second year after treatment, and recovered by itself after stopping treatment. Conclusion To a certain degree RLRL can delay the progression of children and adolescent myopia without obvious adverse omplications in short period.
