Abstract / Summary
Abstract The process of delivering bioactive medication ingredients into a patient's body is known as drug delivery. To create drug delivery systems (DDs), a range of natural resources and synthetic materials derived from natural resources can be used as building blocks. These DDs include liposomal systems, which are composed of a phospholipid membrane with a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. Lipid-rich spherical or multilayered spherical structures, liposomes vary in size (from 2 to > 5000 nm), manufacturing methods, processing, and medication loading. Modern drug delivery formulations have found numerous benefits of liposomal drug delivery systems over free medication treatment for cancer or conventional liposomes. Recent studies have demonstrated that liposome nanocarriers offer exceptional drug loading capacity, drug protection, increased bioavailability, improved intracellular delivery, and greater therapeutic impact due to their exceptional performance in targeted delivery. By delivering the medicine that fights metastases over an extended period of time and minimizing systemic adverse effects on healthy tissues and organs, the multifunctional and stimulus-responsive nanocarriers for cancer treatment delivery increase treatment effectiveness. This article provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying the release of pharmaceuticals from liposomes, the interaction between liposomal anticancer treatments and cancer cells, and the encapsulation of various anticancer agents in liposomes. Liposomes have demonstrated exceptional promise in the creation of vaccines, gene delivery, cancer treatment, and diagnostic imaging. Theragnostic applications and targeted drug delivery have become possible because to the combination of liposomes with nanotechnology. Additionally, emerging tendencies emphasize how they contribute to individualized medicine. Liposomal drug delivery methods are still developing despite obstacles, offering substantial improvements in therapeutic interventions and opening the door for more individualized and efficient treatment plans in contemporary medicine.
