Abstract
Hypertension is a growing health burden in Ethiopia, and most literature conducted in this regard primarily focused on its epidemiology, prevalence, and treatment. However, few studies have explored the lived experiences and psychosocial dimensions of patients living with hypertension, which are essential for providing holistic patient-centered care. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of patients with hypertension attending follow-up clinics at Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia, 2024. A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted from October 18–29, 2024, at Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Initially, 15 in-depth interviews were proposed for the interview, however, data saturation was reached after 11 interviews. Participants were selected using purposive sampling with a maximum variation strategy (age, sex, education level, and marital status). Data was collected using semi-structured interviewer guide, and quality of the study was assured through researcher triangulation, peer debriefing, an audit trial, and achieving data saturation. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and translated into English. The translated transcripts were analyzed thematically, and ATLAS.ti software was used to facilitate data management and coding. A total of 11 hypertensive patients were included. Six participants were male, and all of them were aged 40 years and above. A total of twenty-seven codes and twelve categories were identified and grouped into six themes. The identified themes were Theme 1: Diagnosis and initial reactions, Theme 2: Management strategies and health practices, Theme 3: Support systems and relationships, Theme 4: Emotional health and well-being, Theme 5: Challenges and barriers, and Theme 6: Future concerns and aspirations. This study illustrates the complex interplay of emotional responses, management strategies, social support, and future concerns that shape the experiences of individuals with hypertension. Therefore, healthcare providers and policymakers should consider these dimensions to design a comprehensive patientcare and support system that can address the medical, emotional and psychological needs of patients with hypertension.
