Abstract / Summary
This case report details the management of dental complications in an 11-year-old male diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare systemic vasculitis characterized by vasculitis of small- and medium-sized vessels, peripheral eosinophilia, late-onset asthma, and necrotizing granulomas. This case highlights specific oral features of EGPA in pediatric patients, which have not been reported in detail in previous literature. Therefore, this case is of great significance for the study of EGPA and tooth loss in children. The patient exhibited persistent miliary papules, progressive tooth loss, and episodic facial swelling. Clinical examination revealed extensive alveolar bone resorption and advanced periodontitis. Laboratory findings, which confirmed eosinophilia and elevated inflammatory markers, corroborated the diagnosis of EGPA along with imaging data. Treatment included extracting loose teeth and providing transitional dentures, with plans for subsequent definitive prosthetic rehabilitation. Due to the severely low and flat alveolar bone, conventional complete dentures were unsuitable because they could not achieve proper positioning and stability. Therefore, the Biofunctional Prosthetic System (BPS) (Ivoclar Vivadent ® ) denture restoration, developed by Ivoclar Vivadent, was employed. BPS is an evidence-based protocol for fabricating complete dentures with optimized function and retention. The intervention significantly improved the patient’s oral functionality and aesthetic appearance. The case report highlights the importance of recognizing and managing the oral features of rare disease EGPA, showcasing the value of an innovative prosthodontic technique, the BPS (Ivoclar Vivadent ® ), for denture restoration and interdisciplinary collaboration in stomatology.
