Pyoderma gangrenosum in a patient with Behçet’s disease: A case report and literature review
By Toshiyuki Yamamoto.
Abstract
Introduction
Behçet’s disease and pyoderma gangrenosum are classified as neutrophilic diseases; however, their association is rare. Case Presentation: A 48-year-old man with Behçet’s disease presented with a deep ulcer on the lower leg. Histopathological examination showed marked infiltration of neutrophils and mononuclear cells in the dermis without vasculitis, consistent with pyoderma gangrenosum. The patient was successfully treated with oral prednisolone (30 mg/day), and healed within 2 months. Behçet’s disease and pyoderma gangrenosum are both neutrophilic diseases in which activated neutrophils play significant pathogenic roles. Local formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) was detected in the biopsy specimen obtained from the edge of the ulcer.
Conclusion
This study reports a rare association between Behçet's disease and pyoderma gangrenosum, and reviews previously reported cases of their co-occurrence.
