Surgical management of congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a pony foal

Summary A five‐month‐old Welsh pony filly was admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Helsinki due to neurological signs. Clinicopathological findings showed elevated ammonium and bile acid levels. Computed tomography revealed an aberrant vessel originating from an enlarged splenic vein, leading to the right azygos vein, suggesting a vascular anomaly. The aberrant vessel was successfully ligated via ventral midline approach a month later. The foal recovered well from surgery with a minor complication of incisional infection. There was no recurrence of clinical signs at the follow‐up 10 months post‐operatively.
