Abstract
Abstract Leishmaniasis in Panama is mainly cutaneous or mucocutaneous. We report the first molecularly confirmed case of Leishmania infantum visceral leishmaniasis in Panama, diagnosed in a Nicaraguan patient with HIV, who had systemic symptoms and a nodular skin lesion. HSP70 PCR sequencing of blood confirmed the species. This case underscores the diagnostic and treatment challenges of visceral leishmaniasis in immunocompromised patients and the importance of molecular species identification.
