Abstract
Background Parenchymal calcification is not a characteristic neuroradiologic manifestation of Moyamoya disease (MMD) or Moyamoya syndrome. Objective To characterize the prevalence, distribution, and clinical course of parenchymal calcification in patients with MMD or Moyamoya syndrome. Materials and methods This single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted between March 2002 and July 2023. Patients with a definitive diagnosis of MMD or Moyamoya syndrome were reviewed to identify those with parenchymal calcifications. Patient characteristics were determined based on established diagnostic criteria. Results Among the 119 patients, pathological parenchymal calcifications were identified in 10 patients (8.5%). Five patients (4.2%) had no underlying predisposition to intracranial calcification. Conclusions Parenchymal calcification occurred in a subset of patients with MMD, even in the absence of known predisposing conditions.
