Two pathways, opposing effects: Estrogen regulation of atrial reentry
By Pei‐Chi Yang.
Abstract
Estrogen affects cardiac electrophysiology both acutely, through ion channel proteins, and over longer periods through altered gene expression, with potentially opposing effects. Together with inherent differences in cardiac ion channel expression, these effects may contribute to sex-specific arrhythmia risk. This is well established in the ventricles, where female sex is a recognized risk factor for long QT syndrome and torsades de pointes, whereas the Brugada syndrome phenotype is more common in men.
