Moving from evidence to access: physical activity for youth mental health
By Pillaveetil Sathyadas Indu and Simon Rosenbaum.
Abstract
One in seven adolescents worldwide lives with a mental health condition.1 Across south and southeast Asia, mental health systems receive less than 1% of national budgets, with treatment gaps as high as 90%.2 No expansion of specialised services will close that gap alone. A Lancet Psychiatry Commission has set out how physical activity should be embedded within mental health care,3 but across the region, many young people will never reach those services. Physical activity offers one way to act where young people already are.
