Caring for individuals with dementia: New insights associated with specific dementia types
By Susan W. Lehmann.
Abstract
Dementia is a growing global health concern. It is estimated that currently about 57 million people live with dementia globally, and by 2050, it is projected that this number will rise to about 152 million people [1,2]. Dementia is a syndrome of acquired cognitive impairment that causes progressive loss of function for independence and for daily living activities. While most cases of dementia occur before age 65, it can also develop in adults younger than age 65. The burden on family carers, communities and societies in general to meet these needs is significant.
