Abstract / Summary
Individuals with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) who received 8 weeks of treatment with the glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) receptor agonist semaglutide experienced a significant reduction in heavy‐drinking days and alcohol‐related consequences relative to placebo, a new Phase 2 trial has found. Semaglutide did not result in significant improvement on the primary outcome measure of alcohol craving, however. Study results were published online July 29, 2026 in the American Journal of Psychiatry .
