Abstract / Summary
ABSTRACT Long‐term survivors of HIV have navigated a landscape of multidimensional challenges throughout their lives. There remains a need for more research on the lived experiences of long‐term survivors to understand the longitudinal psychological effects of HIV so that appropriate mental health and wellness interventions can be developed and implemented. This study explored the experiences of long‐term survivors of HIV ( N = 13) using photovoice, a participatory research methodology that uses photo elicitation. The results yielded five themes: life beyond the diagnosis, maintaining physical health, financial and psychological stress, persevering and overcoming, and advocacy and activism. The implications for addressing the challenges and resilience of long‐term survivors in counseling practice, training, and research are discussed.
