Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to test the influence of rose hips ethanolic extract (RHEE) and its combination with pioglitazone (PIO) or vanadyl sulphate (VOSO4) against the development of osteoarthritis secondary to type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in albino rats. Seventy rats were separated into seven groups. Group (G) [1]: A single dosage of citrate buffer {1 mL/Kg body weight (B.W.)} was administered intraperitoneally (I.P.) to rats. G [2-7]: Rats were given a single I.P. injection of nicotinamide (120 mg/kg B.W.), followed by a single I.P. dose of streptozotocin (SZC) (60 mg/Kg B.W.) to induce T2DM. G 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 were orally received PIO [10 mg / Kg B.W.], VOSO4 [5 mg / kg B.W.], RHEE [250 mg / Kg B.W.], (PIO and RHEE) and (VOSO4 and RHEE), respectively daily for 8 weeks. Our results indicated that diabetic group showed a significant deterioration of oxidant, antioxidant, diabetic, inflammatory, osteoarthritis and genetic biomarkers with histopathological changes in pancreas and knee joint tissues and degenerative changes in articular cartilage. Oral administration of PIO, VOSO4, RHEE, (PIO+RHEE) and (VOSO4 +RHEE) reversed these effects. Our data proved that using (PIO+RHEE) and (VOSO4 +RHEE) is more efficient in ameliorating diabetic and osteoarthritic state than using other treatments.
