The transition to higher education is marked by academic stressors that increase the prevalence of mental disorders. Physical activity emerges as a vital mediator, although sedentary behavior prevails in university routines, negatively impacting emotional well-being.
To analyze the relationship between physical activity levels, sedentary behavior, and mental health indicators in university students, focusing on the profile of Physical Education undergraduates. Material and Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted across databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and RBAFS, covering 22 articles published between 2010 and 2025. The analysis focused on the correlation between motor practice and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress.
Studies confirm that regular physical activity significantly reduces psychological distress by improving self-esteem, sleep quality, and social adaptation. High levels of sedentary behavior were found to be a predictor of depression, even in physically active individuals. In Physical Education courses, a paradox was observed: although students show higher initial vigor, there is a tendency toward reduced leisure-time physical activity throughout the degree due to academic overload, increasing emotional vulnerability by the end of the program.
physical activity is an indispensable neuroprotective factor in the academic environment. It is imperative that institutions promote strategies to reduce sitting time and protect students' active routines, ensuring that technical knowledge translates into self-care and psychological resilience.
