Association of Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Dementia: A Health Registry Database Study

Objectives

Dementia and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) share common neurodegenerative risk factors. We examined the association between AMD and dementia. Methods and Analysis: This was a retrospective cohort study using an aggregated electronic health records network. Patients with AMD were matched 1:1 to pseudophakic controls without AMD or prior dementia using propensity score matching (PSM) for demographics and comorbidities. Outcomes included the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), vascular dementia, and unspecified dementia, compared using relative risk (RR).
