Abstract
Aim
To evaluate descent of the human ovary during the fetal period and its changing topographical relations.
Materials and methods
The study comprises of 60 ovaries (30 foetuses) aged between 12 to 32 weeks without any gross abnormalities.
Results
At the early weeks the ovaries were located above the pelvic brim. Between weeks 20 and 22, the fetal ovaries were located below the pelvic brim, except in one case where the right ovary remained above the linea terminalis. From week 23 onward, the ovaries descended into the pelvic cavity but had not yet reached the ovarian fossa. The round ligament was first observed at the 12th gestational week, which was the earliest stage available for analysis. By the 20th week, the broad ligament was also clearly visible.
